Beth Cross, Grade 12 Coordinator, organized Country Day’s first ever Faculty Prize Roast for two very special members of the Class of 2016.
Each year, faculty nominate, discuss, vote, and award one male and one female member of the senior class who, through effort and character, arts, athletics and scholarship, have best demonstrated the ideals and spirit of La Jolla Country Day School. This year’s recipients of the award were Brandon Camp and Sophie Ausmus. Faculty members gathered for lunch with Sophie and Brandon and as the two sat in front of the room, faculty shared memories and stories about them. Mrs. Cross believes that the recipients of the most coveted award given at Country Day should hear first-hand why they deserve the distinction. Here are a few comments faculty made:
“Sophie and Brandon are the poster children of our scholar, artist, and athlete of character.”
“In my senior English class, we write a journey speech at the beginning of the year and one student mentioned their first experience when they arrived at Country Day in 8th grade. He was having trouble opening his locker and it was Sophie who introduced herself and offered to help.”
“When I spoke with Brandon during a 10th grade advisory session about grade reports I asked him, ‘what is your end goal? What do you hope to get out of all of this?’ He responded, ‘to be a better brother.’ At graduation when I went looking for him, I found him across the amphitheater taking pictures with his younger brother.”
“Even though I didn’t teach either one of you, seeing your smiles everyday on campus made the community a better place.”
“Brandon and Sophie both know how to inspire and motivate their peers, whether in sports or in the classroom. They bring out the best in people.”
