Forty-two Upper School students were inducted into the World Language Honor Society during a ceremony on Friday, December 1, in Community Hall. Celebrating the outstanding academic achievement and passion that students have for the languages and cultures, the event honored three societies: Chinese, French and Spanish.
Upper School World Language Chair Eva Power welcomed students and families, new inductees received their cords and certificates by Upper School Head Joe Cox, Ph.D., and music was provided by the Upper School Honors orchestra. Three students presented a personal reflection on the study of language and culture from their perspective: Jaron Fabular (French), Sofia Islas (Chinese) and Sarah Suttner (Spanish).
The mission of La Jolla Country Day World Language Honor Societies is to recognize those students who have excelled in the study of their chosen language and to promote a continuous interest in the study of languages and culture in college.
In order to become eligible for membership, the following criteria are considered:
High academic performance (three semesters A-, two earned in Honors or AP classes)
Have no semester grade below 80 percent in a language class
Be enrolled in an AP or Honors language class at the time of the induction ceremony
Have the approval and recommendation of her/his world language teacher based on honorable character

Students are inducted into the World Language Honor Society in the fall in a ceremony where they pledge to continue to master their language and expand their cultural awareness of the people who speak it. Community service is an integral component and inductees must complete their community service requirements in order to maintain their status, be eligible for scholarship opportunities and be honored at graduation.
