Alumni Join Forces With the Next Generation to Fight Hunger

As Torreys, one of the utmost hallmarks of a Country Day education is a legacy of service. Throughout their years at LJCDS, students of all ages help better our local community beyond Genesee Avenue. Whether it is a fourth grader participating in Philanthropy Partners, researching and choosing a nonprofit organization to support, or an Upper Schooler leading a myriad of school-wide community service projects as a member of the Community Service Board, service lies at the heart of what it means to be a Torrey.
On Saturday, February 22, that tradition was carried on, as alumni and their families joined forces at Feeding San Diego to help support those facing food insecurity. Organized by the LJCDS Alumni Council, multiple generations of Torreys came together to glean and pack 3,000 pounds of apples and 600 pounds of tomatoes, helping to alleviate hunger for approximately 900 families.
As a notable bonus, Torreys from a wide range of class years had the opportunity to get to know one another as they packed apples and tomatoes side-by-side. While they might not have overlapped on campus as LJCDS students, their passion for service stemming from their roots at Country Day provided an instant bond. We thank Lindsey Thompson McGrath ’96 for leading this meaningful opportunity to bring current and former LJCDS students and their families together. We always say “once a Torrey, always a Torrey,” and on this special afternoon, our motto rang true as ever.
