"I inspire greatness for a better world by helping students recognize their strengths and helping them focus their efforts on using those strengths as a foundation for their future. Our work in college counseling caters to students as individuals and personalizes their college search process. We help students identify their values and hopes for the future and in turn, find colleges that will support them in achieving their goals."

Damien Fatongia joined La Jolla Country Day School in January 2019 after being on the “other side of the desk” for 13 years. Prior to LJCDS, Mr. Fatongia worked as associate director for West Coast Admissions for Trinity College in Hartford, CT and also spent a decade working for Saint Mary’s College of California in San Francisco. As a first-generation college student, Mr. Fatongia’s interest in college admissions was driven by his high school counselor who helped him every step of the way as he was conducting his college search.

Mr. Fatongia earned his Bachelor of Arts in sociology and anthropology from Saint Mary’s College of California and has done postgraduate work at his alma mater in the School of Education’s counseling program.

“I inspire greatness for a better world by helping students develop a passion for nature and the larger universe. I encourage my students to explore, experiment, ask deeper questions and think more creatively. I hope to help them discover and appreciate the complexities and wonders in our natural world.”

Lauren Fieberg, M.A.Ed., believes that every student has the power to be an agent for change and that the next generation has the capacity and creativity to solve our most complex problems. Ms. Fieberg has dedicated her career to science education. By serving as a mentor and educator, she hopes to provide every student with the tools they need to think critically and develop creative solutions to make our planet a better place for all species.

Ms. Fieberg earned a Master of Arts in Education, a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. “I inspire greatness for a better world by taking the time to get to know my students as individuals. Whether it is understanding their learning styles and educational strengths or caring about what they do for fun on the weekends and knowing what activities excite them, each of these is just as important as the other and is what makes each student unique. When you feel appreciated and understood as an individual, then you are better equipped to take risks in your learning.”

Daniella Field is currently a first-grade associate educator. Over the years, Mrs. Field has filled many roles at LJCDS. From being a substitute to an associate educator in kindergarten and third grade, to lead educator in both third and fourth grade, Mrs. Field feels lucky to have been immersed in the different parts of the fabric that make up the Lower School.

Ms. Field is a San Diego native who can’t imagine herself living anywhere else in the world. Thus, when she had to make the decision of where to go to college, she didn’t go very far. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of San Diego and received her teaching credential and master’s degree at National University while working as an associate educator at LJCDS.

Ms. Field enjoys traveling, music, photography, the outdoors and spending time with her husband and two sons. Both of her boys are happy and thriving students at LJCDS.

“My role at La Jolla Country Day School is to support an office dedicated to helping outstanding students start their path here. That path begins with the application process. As a member of the admission team, I provide support for families as they navigate these crucial first steps. When applicants become students here, I am one of many hands who helped them become part of this community that will give them the knowledge, skills and resources to achieve great things, and in that sense, I help to inspire greatness.”

From an early age, Catherine Florendo’s parents taught her to value education. She was the first person in her family to graduate from college. Before joining LJCDS, she was teaching associate at San Diego State University, an instructional assistant at Miramar College and a transcript coordinator supporting the office of the registrar at Ashford University. Mrs. Florendo is currently the assistant to the office of admission.

Mrs. Florendo has a passion for language and literature, particularly British novels and poetry.  She earned her bachelor’s degree in literature at the University of California, San Diego and her master’s degree in linguistics at San Diego State University.

“I really loved school, and I enjoyed being a student. When I look at Country Day – the beautiful campus, spaces that foster learning and creativity, faculty and staff who genuinely believe in and support the school’s mission to develop students who value academics, arts, athletics, and service to community – I can’t help but wish I had gone to a school like this one.”
