World Language
Spanish is taught during four 30-minute sessions per week in Grades 1–4. Classes are taught exclusively in Spanish for maximum exposure through an integrated program called “Descubre el Español.” These are elementary, research-based programs designed to teach younger children Spanish as a second language. They provide a sequential, spiraled approach to language learning using authentic language and literature in context, as well as colorful and engaging materials. Both programs not only promote second-language learning but also facilitate cultural awareness in a number of ways. The texts and student activity books are student-centered and contain both nonfiction and fiction stories as well as activities designed primarily to promote oral language proficiency and begin the development of reading skills. Spanish at Country Day, as a specialty class, is designed to lay the foundation for future proficiency in middle school and beyond. A pull-out program is offered for heritage speakers, which is focused on reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and grammar at the appropriate levels.
The goals of the Lower School Spanish program are for students to develop the following:
-An ear for recognizing and pronouncing the sounds, intonations and rhythms of the Spanish language when speaking and listening
-The capacity to recognize and use basic vocabulary and grammatical concepts, allowing for communication pertinent to a child’s daily life
-An understanding of the richness of Hispanic cultures and history and an appreciation for cultural differences
-Motivation and commitment to engage in Spanish (and other language) learning beyond Lower School and through life

These classes are designed for heritage Spanish speakers. Classes are held four times a week for 30 minutes. Two texts from the Mexican Public School System are used: a reading book and a book on grammar, writing and comprehension exercises. In class, students engage in many activities that include writing, reading, sharing, speaking, listening as well as grammar.
The main objective is for students to improve their written and verbal skills and develop their love for reading.
