Students attend the San Diego City Attorney Debate

On Wednesday, February 10, a group of Middle and Upper School students attended the San Diego City Attorney debate as guests of the University of San Diego Law School at the Joan B. Kroc Center for Peace & Justice.
They were treated to a lively and intelligent debate between Ethics Commission Chairman Gil Cabrera, Port Commissioner Rafael Castellanos, Chief Deputy City Attorney Mara Elliott, county prosecutor Robert Hickey, and First Amendment lawyer Bryan Pease. Also on hand were Country Day parents USD Law School Professor Orly Lobel and Dean Stephen Ferruolo.
Two of the students, Juliet Welk (8th grade) and Faith Robinson (9th grade), shared their impressions.
Juliet: “The debate between the city attorney candidates was not only educational but a great experience. I was able to learn a lot about what a city attorney does and the current problems in San Diego County. I found it very interesting to hear the different ideas each candidate had to address each issue. Throughout the event, I found myself forming opinions about the candidates and their beliefs. By the end of the night, I had a much clearer image of the city and the problems I will encounter when I take on more civic duties as I reach adulthood.”
Faith: “I thought the debate was rich in the diversity of views ranging from extremely conservative to one of the most progressive political standpoints I have ever heard. In my opinion, Gil Cabrera, though asked the least amount of questions, took home the trophy from the debate. Mr. Cabrera was the only one who successfully gave sound arguments detailing what he would do for the city in office.”
