Ninth Grade Oral History Project

By By Scott Sanders, history teacher
La Jolla Country Day School freshmen recently presented their oral history project videos. Over the course of three special evenings at the San Diego History Center, students shared a brief video clip highlighting their interviewed subjects.

San Diego History Center has been a partner with LJCDS for five years on this project, which is the culmination of months of work. Students selected a resident of San Diego, researched and prepared questions based on a questionnaire, conducted and recorded a formal interview, transcribed the interview, edited and uploaded the video clip to be shared, and prepared an introductory speech.

In addition to the skills developed by the students, the interviews and transcriptions will live on as pieces of San Diego's history, accessible to all at the SDHC. The subjects represent many aspects of San Diego and its history, as well as LJCDS history. Several favorite teachers, coaches and community service directors were interviewed, along with residents who were born and raised in San Diego, immigrants from several countries, professionals in many fields, military veterans, retirees, parents and grandparents.

Please see the complete list of interview subjects below. Congratulations to the freshmen class on a job well done and a terrific series of presentations!
