By Lorrie Culver, Upper School and managing librarian
On Monday, May 6, the La Jolla Country Day School library hosted Brian Floca, the Caldecott award-winning author and illustrator of “Locomotive” and many other nonfiction picture books, including “Moonshot” (a Robert F. Sibert Honor book).
Floca also illustrates books for other authors, including Avi. Avi and Floca recently collaborated on “Old Wolf,”a novel for young readers. Floca presented and drew pictures at assemblies for students in kindergarten, first and second grades and was the guest presenter at our annual Newbery Readers’ Award assembly. Students learned how books are created and about trains and the Apollo missions through entertaining lessons from Floca.
For our Newbery program, Country Day students in Grades 4-6 read books that have received the Newbery Medal, an annual award for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Fourth grade students received personalized bookmarks for their efforts while fifth and sixth graders were honored with certificates, engraved medals, paperweights and trophies based on the number of books read.
