WWII Veteran Visits Upper School American Studies Class
By Deborah Shaul
On Tuesday, May 17, WWII veteran and LJCDS grandfather (D.J. Sollender '17) Joel Sollender came to speak to Deborah Shaul’s American Studies class about his experiences as a Jewish soldier and POW in Germany during WWII.
Mr. Sollender spoke eloquently about his best friends from his company, the training, and the specific experiences of his time in a prisoner of war camp, as well as the visits he took back to some of those locations, in the decades following the war. He brought medals to share with the students, including his Purple Heart and his Bronze Star. Sollender was moved to tears at times, recalling his experiences, and said that it was his honor to serve for the USA.
