Q&A with Lower School Head Melanie Baier

By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
When are you the happiest?
I am happiest when I spend time with the people who l love and care about, including Marty, my 5-year-old Goldendoodle! I am also happy when I show gratitude to others. If I have a difficult day, I write a thank you card or two, and it changes my outlook immediately.

What inspired you to go into education?
I was very ill as a young child. My second-grade teacher, Mrs. Inzerello, came to my house every day after school to teach me and keep me up with my class. She made such an impression on me that I never truly wanted to be anything other than a teacher from that time forward.

What makes a good school?
A school must be a place where students and adults can take risks and support each other in those risks. A Lower School, in particular, should be warm and caring, yet challenging. It should give students the opportunity to explore interests, but also build a foundation of knowledge that they will carry with them forever.

Share with us an important life lesson.
Be grateful! Be grateful for each and every person in your life and every adventure you take based on the decisions you make.

Very first job?
I was a movie theater concessions stand worker for $2.15 an hour!
