Experiencing the World through New Eyes

By Alexcia Doak ’21
During spring break 2019, La Jolla Country Day School students took part in experiential education trips. Sophomore Alexcia Doak shares her experience in China.
Three words that I would use to explain and define my trip to China are eye-opening, educational and, of course, fun. This trip has taught me so much about both myself and the world. Before I left, I was honestly very nervous because I do not speak a word of Mandarin, and I had no idea what to expect traveling to a different country with a different culture. However, when I got there I immediately saw that everyone in China was so welcoming, understanding and patient with me when I didn’t speak Mandarin and that their culture is not as drastically different from my own as I thought it would be. During the trip, I learned that one of the most important aspects of their culture is respect for elders and family, and they are proud and value their country’s culture, customs and history, too.

My favorite city on this trip was Xi’an. The activities we did here were less touristy so we were able to see what life would actually be like there and visit villages and get out of the big city. Some of my favorite activities were the hot pot dinner, the bike ride along the city wall and also the Terracotta Warrior Museum.

Not only was Xi’an a beautiful city, but my absolute favorite part was when we were able to visit a home for special-needs children and adults. I had so much fun dancing, singing and playing games with all of the people there. It was a healthy reminder that even though there is a language barrier, these kids are just like me. We were received with smiles and gratitude. It was nice to see what kind of activities the organization put together to create a peaceful and fun environment for the residents to do every day and to do what they love. For example, I know that some of them took dance and art lessons, and one of the young men was very talented at playing the drums. One thing that really stood out about this community was how appreciative they all were. They were so happy just to meet us and be able to spend time with us. This experience really touched me and made me grateful for what I have and that I should appreciate the people I have in my life and live in the moment.

I am so grateful that I had this opportunity to visit China. This is a trip I will cherish and never forget it. The most important thing I learned on this adventure is that people are the same everywhere. Although geography is different, architecture is different, the climate is different and people may look different, we are still one people.
