Sweet 16 Invitational

The 15th Annual Sweet Sixteen Girls Basketball Invitational Tournament opened in grand fashion for our Torreys on Wednesday, November 29. Teams from Arizona, Colorado, Florida and Northern and Southern California displayed their talents at this four-day event.
 
In game one of the tournament, LJCDS, ranked #1 in San Diego, dismantled Canyon Springs 68–28, led by the veteran senior squad, Bianca Notarainni (15 points, 10 rebounds), Kiera Oakry (11 points), Jayda Villareal (10 points), Kendal Ellenbeck (10 points) and Marissa Urbano-Sedlund (six assists and six steals).

On day two, LJCDS defeated California state ranked, Bishop Alemany 56–50. Senior forward Kendal Ellenbeck led the charge with 22 points and 11 rebounds, going six for six from the 3-point line. Kiera Oakry also finished with a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Jayda Villareal with 10 points and Jazzy Anousinh with nine points and six assists.

Day three was a day of comebacks. LJCDS rallied back from a 12-point deficit and outscored Highland Ranch (CO) 19 –7 in the fourth quarter to win the game 47–45. Jayda Villareal led all scoring with 17 points, followed by Pua Tufaga and Kiera Oakry with seven points each and Kendal Ellenbeck with nine rebounds and three blocks. With the win, the Lady Torreys advanced to the Sweet 16 Championship Game vs Pinewood, the #3 ranked team in California.

In the championship, the Lady Torreys lost a tough game against #3 ranked Pinewood 51–39.  The Torreys started out slow and were down 10 at the end of the first quarter. They rallied in the third quarter to cut the lead to six points, but it was not enough to make a comeback. Senior forward, Bianca Notarainni, finished with a double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds, followed by freshman, Jazzy Anousinh, with 11 points and four assists.  

The Lady Torreys finished in 2nd place in the Sweet 16 Tournament. Two Torreys, Jayda Villareal and Bianca Notarainni, were named to the All-Tournament team. Congratulations team!
