Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees
Alumni are honored at this year’s induction ceremony.
Congratulations to the 2023 LJCDS Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, including individual athletes Tommy Edman ’13, Phil Holoubek ’87 and Kelsey Plum ’13, as well as Coach Peter Ogle ’71 and the 2011 Men’s Baseball Team. Approximately 170 alumni, current and former faculty and staff, and current families attended the heartfelt ceremony on January 19, 2024. The reception started in Community Hall, and the magic of the evening extended to the halftime celebration during the LJCDS men’s basketball game.
The awardees were introduced by former coaches who told heartfelt stories of their time together at LJCDS, bringing a genuine sense of Torrey pride to everyone in the room. The evening was highlighted by the love these athletes showed for one another, their coaches and the school, perfectly capturing the spirit of camaraderie that makes LJCDS a special community and our athletic program one to be proud of.
The LJCDS Athletic Hall of Fame, established in 2006, recognizes members of the Torrey community who have distinguished themselves through exceptional contributions to our athletics program—as an athlete, team, coach, administrator or friend of sport. They are recognized for helping propel LJCDS athletics to new heights. Inductees are nominated by the community and selected by the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.

Athlete Tommy Edman ’13
Tommy was a four-year starter for the LJCDS baseball team from 2010 to 2013. As a freshman, he set the single-season record for runs scored. Tommy helped lead the Torreys to the first CIF baseball championship in school history in his sophomore year. He hit a leadoff home run in the championship game, setting the tone for a 7-0 win over Francis Parker. Tommy holds the LJCDS career record for hits, runs, stolen bases and ERA. He was a four-time All-Coastal League selection, a three-time All-CIF selection, the 2013 Coastal League MVP, a 2013 Max-Preps All-State selection, a 2013 Louisville Slugger First-Team All-American, and a 2013 CIF San Diego Section Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Tommy went on to play baseball at Stanford University, where he earned a degree in math and computational science. At Stanford, he was named First-team All-Pac-12, All-Pac-12 Defensive Team, and All-Pac-12 Academic Team. The St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, made his MLB debut in 2019, and was named to the MLB All-Rookie Team. Tommy has started all over the diamond for the Cardinals and earned the National League Gold Glove at second base in 2021. He also received the 2021 Cardinals Heart and Hustle Award and the 2022 Fielding Bible Award.
2011 Men’s Baseball Team
The 2011 Men’s Baseball Team was the Christian Patriot Tournament, Lions Tournament and CIF Division IV champions. After two thrilling come-from-behind extra-inning victories in the playoffs, the Torreys defeated Francis Parker 7-0 to claim the first CIF baseball championship in school history. The team finished the season with a record of 25-7, the most wins in school history. Thirteen members of the Torreys competed in athletics beyond high school, and three played professional baseball. The roster included Sam Ayala ’12, Brent Bishop ’13, Frank Brown ’11, Colby Bruno ’13, Matt Burzette ’11, Tommy Edman ’13, Zach Feldman ’13, Eddie Garcia ’13, Micheal Glatt ’11, Alex Guenette ’13, Dustin Hughes ’13, Ian Lutz ’12, Chase Merryman ’13, Nate Michalski ’13, Ruben Pena ’11, Austin Rooke ’11, Yossi Stein ’13, Anthony Torres ’11, Roman Valenzuela ’12 and Jackson Volle ’13. They were led by head coach John Edman, assistant coaches Robert Grasso and Dan Padgett, and team manager Johnny Edman ’12.

Phil was a four-sport athlete at LJCDS, competing in basketball, football, cross country, and track and field from 1983 to 1987. He is one of the greatest basketball players in school history, finishing his career as the all-time leading scorer and rebounder and was the first player in school history to score 1,000 career points (finishing with 1,290). In 1986, Phil led the Torreys to the school’s only undefeated regular season, finishing with a record of 23-0. The Torreys won Coastal League titles in 1986 and 1987 without losing a league contest, the first men’s basketball league championships in school history. During his senior year, Phil led all of San Diego in scoring with 651 points and was named First Team All-CIF. He was a nominee for the San Diego County Athlete of the Year as a senior. Phil was also the league champion in the 800-meter dash on the track and field team. He went on to play both basketball and golf at Occidental College.

Kelsey became the all-time NCAA scoring leader at the University of Washington with 3,527 points, breaking the single-season NCAA scoring record with 1,109 points. In 2017, Kelsey was the most dominant player in college basketball. She was named the Associated Press and ESPNW Player of the Year and won the Dawn Staley, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Nancy Lieberman awards and the Naismith and Wade Trophies. Kelsey was the first overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft by the San Antonio Stars, who then moved to Las Vegas. With the Las Vegas Aces, Kelsey won back-to-back WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023, was named All-WNBA First Team, and was MVP of the WNBA All-Star Game. Coach Ogle was a master women’s volleyball coach and physical education educator from 1978 to 2018 and was the head varsity baseball coach from 1980 to 2001. He is the winningest volleyball coach in school history. During his 41 years at LJCDS, Coach Ogle won 739 matches, three Coastal League championships, seven CIF championships, four southern regional championships, and three state championships. More importantly, Coach Ogle mentored his players, always stressing character over victories. As good as he was as a coach on the volleyball courts, Coach Ogle was just as impactful as a physical education instructor, whether working with the youngest students on campus or the Middle School baseball and softball teams. His wisdom, positive nature and care for students were consistently on display. Coach Ogle was inducted as a San Diego High School Coaching Legend by the San Diego Hall of Champions in 2019.
