Senior Earns 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar

By Communications
Congratulations to Posy Stoller ’17 who was named 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar—one of the nation's highest honors bestowed upon high school students. Posy is one of 161 American high school seniors who received this prestigious award for her outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service and contribution to LJCDS and the greater community.

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.

Of the 3.5 million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 5,100 candidates qualified for the 2017 awards determined by outstanding performance on the SAT and ACT exams, and through nominations made by Chief State School Officers, other partner recognition organizations or the National YoungArts Foundation’s nationwide YoungArts™ competition. In April, Posy was named one of 722 semi-finalists.

The distinguished awards are given to one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and U.S. families living abroad. Additionally, 15 students are chosen at-large, 20 for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, and 20 for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education. In California, 11 students total were selected for the 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars, five of which were selected in the main category, four in the category of the arts, and two in career and technical education.

"I congratulate this year's class of Presidential Scholars for their devotion to academic excellence and their parents and teachers who have guided them along the way,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. “Today's Presidential Scholars are tomorrow's leaders, and I am confident they will continue to be shining examples as they enter the next phase of their academic careers.”

“Lao Tzu stated, ‘When the student is ready the teacher will appear. When the student is truly ready... The teacher will disappear,'" said Head of School Gary Krahn, Ph.D. “Posy is ready for her next journey. We wish we could keep Posy at LJCDS forever, but she is ready to impact her new community at Harvard. LJCDS is so proud to have been part of her life.”

Posy will be honored for her accomplishments in Washington, D.C. in June.
