By Damien Fatongia, managing director of college counseling
Finding the ideal fit for the next step of the academic journey.
As the class of 2024 concludes their application journey and awaits the outcome of their endeavors, the class of 2025 is in the early phase of their college search, collaborating with their college counselors to craft their initial college lists in the upcoming year. With over 4,000 U.S. colleges, identifying the right institutional fit requires understanding the key distinctions that separate them. Beyond basics like public vs. private status, location or cost, fully exploring the nuances of educational philosophy and specialties will empower teenagers to navigate this important process.

For those aspiring to receive a well-rounded education enriched with critical thinking skills, liberal arts colleges stand out. These institutions prioritize a comprehensive exposure to the humanities, sciences and arts within intimate classroom settings. Faculty members, dedicated solely to teaching, offer personalized mentorship, fostering a community-oriented atmosphere. Graduates from liberal arts colleges distinguish themselves with creative and agile intellect and versatile writing abilities applicable across various professional domains. Notable examples include Reed, Amherst, Denison and Harvard Colleges.

Individuals drawn to research-intensive disciplines such as engineering or healthcare may find their fit in major public universities designated as “R1s” for their highest research activity. These institutions drive cutting-edge discoveries through federal and private grants, involving undergraduates in hands-on research experiences and offering access to robust global alumni networks. Noteworthy research universities in our vicinity include the University of California schools and the University of Southern California.

Specialized engineering and technology institutes explicitly prepare students to design solutions addressing pressing real-world problems. Project-based learning, group endeavors, entrepreneurial thinking and STEM exposure dominate. One can even find art/design universities singularly focused on nurturing creative talent across artistic domains through professional studios and equipment access, facilitating portfolio development critical for these careers. These institutions include Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Pomona, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Dedicated business schools or programs provide targeted training in finance, marketing, management and accounting. Recruiting pipelines channel grads toward business sector jobs. Case study teaching methods encourage decision-making, leadership skills, and thinking on one’s feet, which are characteristics of the business world. Some fantastic options include Bentley University and Babson College. Other options include historically black colleges placing black identity/excellence at their core, like Morehouse College and Howard University or religiously-affiliated campuses welcoming those sharing denominational traditions, like Brigham Young University and Hillsdale College.

This landscape overview just scratches the surface of U.S. higher education’s expansive variety. Identifying sectors resonating with your student based on aligned interests, strengths and professional aspirations will unlock suitable options as you narrow down this rewarding, life-shaping search.
